What is the time commitment for a chapter umpire?
Training sessions, meetings, scrimmages, tournament and regular season games all occur from February through the end of April. Playoff games last into the start of June.
For this 10 – 15 week period, CenTex umpires typically officiate 1-3 days per week. Each official has the ability to indicate their availability to umpire games through our scheduling tool ==> ArbiterSports.
How much can I expect to earn?
CenTex Chapter officials earn $75 for every Sub-Varsity timed game and $85 for every Varsity or untimed Sub-Varsity game. These rates are set by TASO and followed by the high schools. High schools also reimburse mileage based on a predetermined rate schedule that will vary by school ($20 for 0-30.9 miles / $35 for 31-60.9 miles). A “go-getter” first year umpire can earn in excess of $2500 for the 10-12 week long season.
What are the experience requirements to become a high school umpire?
Chapter membership is open to individuals 16 years and older. Members under the age of 18 are limited to Sub-Varsity games only per TASO policies. Our chapter currently has members from 16 to 78. Typically, a high school umpire will have officiated previously at some level of youth baseball — but not always — and this is certainly NOT a requirement. Fill out the form on the Become an Official page and someone from the CenTex chapter will get in touch to see if umpiring high school baseball is right for you.
What equipment will I need and how much does it cost?
Shirts, pants, and shoes can be purchased new for generally less than two hundred dollars. Plate gear (chest protector, shin guards, mask) will cost about at least $225 more. If you are an umpire on a budget, the CenTex chapter can help connect you with resources that can help with discounted or used equipment.
